Description

Icon of Saint Nicholas on Naturally Aged Wood
A wonderful icon depicting Saint Nicholas, one of the greatest saints of Orthodoxy, whose feast is celebrated on December 6th.

Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara of Lycia to devout and wealthy parents. He became an orphan at a young age, inheriting a large fortune, which he gave away to help those in need.

He later devoted himself to an ascetic life, and was eventually honored with the position of Archbishop of Myra. From this position, he took significant action to protect the poor and the needy, establishing hospitals and various charitable institutions. Endowed with a high Christian spirit, courage, and vitality, he encouraged Christians persecuted by the Romans, enduring exile and many hardships himself. During the Diocletian persecutions, he suffered many tortures. However, when Emperor Constantine the Great ascended to the throne, all Christians were freed, and Saint Nicholas returned to his archiepiscopal position. According to tradition, he was also endowed with the gift of miracles, saving many people both while alive and after his death.

He is particularly honored throughout Greece, especially by people of the sea. He is the patron saint of sailors, the Navy, and the Merchant Navy. He is the patron saint of several Greek cities including Alexandroupoli, Volos, Galaxidi, Kozani, Polygyros, Sitia, and Syros.

The history of this particular icon began even before the monk iconographer completed the depiction on the canvas. It is a beautiful work of art, as even the wood of the base is a piece of Mount Athos, originating from an old Athonite cell.
