Description

Icon of Saint Nicholas on Naturally Aged Wood

An exceptional icon depicting Saint Nicholas, one of the greatest saints of Orthodoxy, whose memory is celebrated on December 6th.

Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia, to devout and wealthy parents. He was orphaned at a young age, inheriting a large fortune from his parents, which he distributed to help those in need.

He then dedicated himself to an ascetic life and was later honored with the position of Archbishop of Myra. From this position, he became very active in protecting the poor and the destitute, founding hospitals and various charitable institutions. Gifted with a high Christian spirit, courage, and vitality, he encouraged the persecuted Christians of the Roman Empire, enduring persecution and exile for his stance. During the Diocletian persecutions, he suffered many tortures. However, when Emperor Constantine the Great ascended to the imperial throne, all Christians were freed, and Nicholas returned to his archiepiscopal throne. According to tradition, he was also gifted with the power of miracles, saving many people both during his lifetime and after his death.

He is particularly honored throughout Greece by the people of the sea. He is the patron saint of sailors, the Navy, and the Merchant Marine. He is the patron saint of several cities, including Alexandroupolis, Volos, Galaxidi, Kozani, Polygyros, Sitia, and Syros.

The history of this particular icon begins even before the iconographer monk completes the representation on the canvas. It is a wonderful work of art, as even the wood of the base is a piece of Mount Athos, originating from a restored Athonite cell.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
