Description

Icon of Saint George the Trophy-bearer on Naturally Aged Wood

Saint George the Trophy-bearer was born in Cappadocia in 275 AD to Christian parents. At the age of 18, George enlisted in the Roman army and quickly rose to higher ranks. Emperor Diocletian, in his effort to eradicate Christianity, summoned all the officials to undertake a ruthless campaign against the Christians. George, being among them, confessed in front of the emperor that he was a Christian.

Diocletian became enraged and imprisoned George, subjecting him to a series of tortures during which a voice from heaven was heard saying, “Do not be afraid, George, for I am with you,” and an angel appeared to free the saint, healing his wounds.

In prison, Saint George had a dream in which Christ announced to him that he would receive the crown of martyrdom. The next morning, soldiers led him before the emperor. Once again, George refused to sacrifice to the idols, and Diocletian ordered his beheading.

This wood was used for many years in the earthly Paradise, Mount Athos, serving a purpose in an old cell that was later renovated. The monks, seeing its potential for a new use after the cell’s renovation, carefully cut and preserved the wood using methods known on Mount Athos from the restoration of wooden icons and templon (iconostasis). The halo of Saint George is silver and hammered. The back of the icon bears the inscription “Mount Athos.”

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
