Description

Silk Screen Print of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri on Naturally Aged Wood

An amazing silk screen print of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri, one of the “newly revealed” saints, born in 1384 in Trikala.

To escape from the Ottoman practice of child conscription, he was sent to the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos on Mount Amomon at just 14 years old. He stayed there until he was 18 as a novice monk, then was tonsured a monk and soon after ordained a priest. His sacred relics were discovered by the nun Makaria Desypri on January 3, 1950, at the site where today stands the Holy Monastery of Amomon in Nea Makri, Attica.

According to Christian tradition, since the fall of Athens to the Ottomans in 1416, the Holy Monastery experienced two destructions. During the first, Saint Ephraim was praying in a cave on the mountain. The Ottoman army massacred the other fathers and monks, whom Saint Ephraim buried when he returned. In 1425, the Turks found him and tortured him mercilessly for 8.5 months. He martyred on May 5, 1426, and the tree where he was crucified and took his last breath still exists today.

Two elements combine to create the unique aesthetic of this icon. One is the flawlessly crafted representation of Saint Ephraim of Nea Makri, and the second is the naturally aged wood used as the base of the icon, which comes from the Holy Mount of Athos itself. It is a piece that resulted from restoration work in cells that had been damaged by the passage of time.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
