Description

Icon of Saints Joseph the Hesychast & Ephraim of Katounakia on Naturally Aged Wood

An exceptional representation of two modern Saints of our Church, Elder Joseph the Hesychast (August 16) and Elder Ephraim of Katounakia (February 27), two figures whose lives and works not only inspired many but also left behind a tremendous legacy.

For Joseph the Hesychast, his mother always said that she knew her son would follow the monastic path because when he was born, she saw an angel who had come to take the newborn child. After a unique journey, in January 1938, he moved to the remote caves of Little Saint Anna. There, along with other Athonite Fathers, they shaped the area, built cells, and remained there until 1947. Elder Joseph fell asleep on the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos in 1959, saying: “Everything is finished, I am leaving, I am departing, bless me.”

Elder Ephraim of Katounakia went to the wilderness of Mount Athos in 1933, to Katounakia, to the skete of St. Ephraim the Syrian, where he submitted to the guidance of Elders Ephraim and Nikephoros. In 1935, he became a Great Schema Monk, and the following year, he was ordained a priest. Father Ephraim met the famous Athonite monk Joseph the Cave Dweller or Hesychast and was spiritually connected with him. His nickname on Mount Athos was “the charismatic novice” because of the obedience he showed to Elder Nikephoros, who was widely known for his strictness.

A beautiful silk screen print that stands out not only for its subject matter and the incredible craftsmanship of the Athonite monk but also for the wood used as its base. The monk who created it used naturally aged wood from a cell on Mount Athos, which was restored.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction itself.

The icon is available upon order.
