Icon of the Holy Family on Naturally Aged Wood

This unique icon depicts the Holy Family. The Blessed Virgin Mary is shown with Saint Joseph the Betrothed. In front of them stands the young Christ, dressed in an orange robe.

According to the New Testament, Saint Joseph was the betrothed of the Theotokos. He was a descendant of David, from Bethlehem, but lived in Nazareth. After the birth of Christ, he and the Virgin Mary went to Egypt, as an angel of the Lord warned them that Christ was in danger of being slaughtered by King Herod. After Herod’s death, Joseph, Mary, and the divine infant returned to Nazareth.

Saint Joseph is mentioned for the last time in the New Testament during the journey back from Jerusalem when the twelve-year-old Jesus taught in the Temple of Solomon.

The Orthodox Church canonized him as a saint and commemorates his memory on the Sunday after the Nativity of Jesus Christ, or on December 26th, unless a Sunday intervenes until the end of December.

Joseph the Betrothed and the Theotokos serve the mystery of the divine incarnation of the Lord.
