Description

Serigraph of Saint Marina of Andros on Naturally Aged Wood

Saint Marina was born in Antioch of Pisidia, and at the age of 15, she revealed to her father that she was a Christian, which led him to expel her from the house and no longer consider her his daughter. Shortly afterward, the governor Olympius also learned that Saint Marina was a Christian. He ordered her arrest, interrogated her, and subjected her to horrific tortures in an attempt to make her renounce her faith. The young woman never denied Christ and was eventually beheaded at the age of 16 on July 17, 286 AD.

In Andros, there is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites dedicated to Saint Marina. The establishment of the monastery is dated to 1325 AD, when Saint Marina miraculously appeared to an elderly hermit and showed him the location of her hidden icon in a rock crevice. Later, the hermit, with the financial support of Emperor Manuel II Komnenos, founded the Holy Monastery of Saint Marina in Andros.

This particular icon of Saint Marina is created on naturally aged wood, which comes from a cell on Mount Athos. Due to time and natural elements, the wood required renovation. The wood from this work is cut using special techniques employed by the monks and then serves as the base to create these stunning icons. Through the “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons are available to those who desire to hold a piece of the Athonite tradition.

As the image is handmade and the wood treatment is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
