Icon of Saint Catherine on Naturally Aged Wood
This beautiful serigraph on naturally aged wood depicts Saint Catherine, who is honored on November 25th.
Saint Catherine, the All-Wise and Glorious Bride of Christ, was born into a noble family in Alexandria and was martyred in the early 4th century AD (304 AD). She was exceptionally intelligent and passionate about learning. By the age of eighteen, she had mastered Greek, Roman, and Latin literature and philosophy. She was also well-versed in the doctrines of the Christian faith.
During the reign of Maxentius (son of Maximian), when a persecution against Christians was taking place, Catherine was not afraid. Instead, she boldly proclaimed that Jesus Christ is the one true God. For this, she was arrested by the governor of the region, who attempted to convince her to renounce her faith through debates. When the governor realized the superiority of Catherine’s words, he organized a public debate with the most skilled orators of Alexandria. However, Catherine silenced them all. In fact, some of her interlocutors were persuaded by her arguments and converted to Christianity.
Faced with this outcome, the governor ordered Catherine to be severely tortured, hoping that she would give in and renounce Christ. However, Catherine remained unwavering in her faith. Eventually, she was beheaded by the governor’s orders.
According to tradition, after her martyrdom, angels took her holy relics to protect them and brought them to the top of Mount Sinai. Many years later, holy hermits discovered her relics. To this day, they are preserved at the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai.
This particular serigraph of Saint Catherine has been created by an Athonite monk-iconographer on naturally aged wood, which comes from a restored cell on Mount Athos. Through the “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of Athonite tradition.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
