Description

A special handiwork of an Agiorite monk. The image of the Saint with golden painted sand from the shores of the Athonian State.

Platytera of the Heavens is the name given to that icon of the Virgin Mary that is painted on the inner upper part of the central niche of the Holy Step (Sanctuary) of Orthodox churches.

The Virgin Mary is usually depicted seated on a throne, carrying Jesus Christ in her arms. Many times, however, as in this particular color lithograph, he is also depicted in a standing position with his arms outstretched and slightly raised.

The name Platytera of the Heavens comes from the characteristic verse of the Akathistos Hymn: Rejoice, heaven of the world, vast expanse of clouds.

As the picture is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood.
