Description

A special handiwork of an Agiorite monk. The image of the Saint with golden painted sand from the shores of the Athonian State.

Saint Agnes was born in Salerno, Rome in the 3rd century. Her parents were devout Christians and raised her according to Christian principles. Agni wished to dedicate her life to Christ, and refused any possible suitor.

From a young age, Agni taught her friends about Christ and told them not to worship only him. However, he was accused to some lord and arrested. Despite all the lord’s efforts, he refused to abandon Christ and worship idols. Then he ordered her public humiliation, to walk half-naked through the streets of the city and then to be taken to a brothel. There, however, those who tried to dishonor her were blinded, so she was led out of the brothel.

The lord’s son, who also tried to dishonor her, died on the spot. But after the prayer of the Saint, he was resurrected. Seeing the miracle, 160 people became Christians.

At the request of pagan priests, it was decided to execute the Saint by pyrrhos. However, the fire could not burn the Saint, so she was beheaded, aged just thirteen. Her body was buried outside Rome.

The Chariot of Saint Agnes is kept in the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Agnes “outside the Walls” of Rome.
