Description

A special handiwork of an Agiorite monk. The image of the Saint with golden painted sand from the shores of the Athonian State.

Christian tradition wants the Mother of God to have visited Athos on several occasions, while references are also made to her visit to the Mount together with Saint John and others, by boat. During her visits, the Virgin Mary saved many monks and pilgrims, monasteries and the whole mountain from many calamities with the power of her faith. The icon of Panagia tis Athonitissa, presents Panagia as the protector of the whole mountain, wearing Abbess clothes and standing on top of Mount Athos. The icon is celebrated on August 28.
