Panagia I Athonitissa – Sandblasting – Mount Athos

A unique handicraft by a monk from Mount Athos. The icon of the Saint is created with gold-colored sand from the shores of the Athonite State.

Christian tradition holds that the Mother of God visited Mount Athos on several occasions. There are also accounts of her visiting the Holy Mountain by boat with Saint John and others. During her visits, the Virgin Mary saved many monks, pilgrims, monasteries, and the entire mountain from numerous calamities through the power of her faith. The icon of the Virgin Mary of Athos depicts her as the protector of the entire mountain, dressed in an Abbess’s robe, standing above Mount Athos. This icon is celebrated on August 28th.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood.
