Archangel Michael is portrayed as the Supreme Commander and holds a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testament.

He was the one who saved the angelic forces from their fall with the proclamation, “Let us be attentive! Let us stand aright, let us stand in fear.” For this bold declaration, the Triune God granted him the title of “Prince of the Angelic Orders,” Supreme Commander, and Chief Archangel. He joined all the angels in proclaiming the Trisagion Hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” Furthermore, it is believed that by God’s command, Archangel Michael expelled Adam and Eve from Paradise after their fall.

He was the one who announced to Abraham the command to sacrifice his son Isaac, and later intervened to prevent it. He appeared to Lot and saved him and his family from the destruction of Sodom, and also to Jacob, protecting him from his brother Esau, who sought to kill him. Moreover, Archangel Michael led the people of Israel during their exodus from Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and fire by night, guiding them to the Promised Land.

He is venerated as the protector of the Air Force. Typically, he is depicted holding a spear, but in several representations, he also holds a scepter, a symbol of the authority granted to him by God.

He is celebrated together with Archangel Michael on November 8th.
