Saint Ephraim the Great Martyr (born Konstantinos Morfis) was born on September 14, 1384, on the feast day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, in Trikala, Thessaly. A child of a large family, he was orphaned of his father at a young age, which led his mother to bear the full responsibility of raising him and his seven siblings. She managed to do so with great effort and hard work, ensuring that her children remained faithful to the path of love and Christ, leading a spiritual and virtuous life.

Handmade Icon: Features

This particular icon comes from the Athonite iconographer Hieromonk Vasileios. It is entirely hand-painted on a natural piece of wood. The colors used are in accordance with the Byzantine tradition, and the work has been created following the technique of the Macedonian School, which is practiced in Hieromonk Vasileios’ workshop.

This unique icon has a background of 22-karat gold leaf, and its surface is covered with pure beeswax to ensure that the colors remain vibrant over time.
