Saint Stylianos came from a wealthy family. He was probably born in Paphlagonia, which is why he is called Paphlagonian, although this is not certain. Stylianos was taught early by his parents to be temperate and to consider money as a means for the relief and care of the poor and the sick.

When his parents passed away, he distributed all his inheritance and went to live in the desert as a hermit. There, he met other hermits and lived with them in brotherly love, Christian forbearance, and kindness. The fame of his admirable ascetic life spread to the cities, and many people ran to find him, seeking spiritual guidance.

Despite his hermitic life, Saint Stylianos had great affection and sympathy for children, whom Jesus himself greatly loved. He used to say that if humility is the foundation of virtues, then childhood, by nature, is more virtuous than the older philosophers. Many times, parents brought their children to him, and the saint’s joy was immense. God, rewarding this sacred feeling, endowed the saint with the gift of healing sick children and making barren women fruitful.

Saint Stylianos passed away full of days and virtues. The Church commemorates his memory on November 26th.

Handmade Iconography: Features

This particular icon comes from the Mount Athos iconographer Hieromonk Vasileios. It is entirely hand-painted on a natural piece of wood. The colors used are in accordance with the Byzantine tradition, and the work has been created according to the style of the Macedonian school, which is followed in the workshop of Hieromonk Vasileios.

This unique icon has a background of 22-karat gold leaf, while its surface is covered with pure beeswax to preserve the brightness of the colors over time.
