Our ability to trust is directly related to our belief in providence. What man needs to know is what God’s intentions are for him. Christ’s good news is that God’s intentions for us are good. He who spared His own son, but delivered Him for all of us, Will He not also give us everything with Him? The cross of Christ is God’s sign that He is with us, and “Is God for us, for us?” (Rom. 8:31). If ever we do not see God being with us, it is because, precisely because God is truly with us, He happily does not satisfy our self-destructive desires, which we do not see as truly self-destructive.
