Description

Antiqued Lithograph of the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles

The 12 Apostles were simple men with no particular qualifications, yet through the illumination they received from the Holy Spirit, they spread Christianity, laying the foundation for the present Church.

Jesus Himself chose the continuers of His work, who were: Peter, Andrew, James the son of Zebedee, James the son of Alphaeus, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, Thaddaeus or Judas, Judas Iscariot, and Simon the Zealot. However, after the betrayal of Judas Iscariot and his suicide, Matthias completed the Twelve.

The Church honors them on June 30.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and completed this work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
