Description

Platytera of the Heavens is the name given to the icon of the Virgin Mary, which is typically painted in the upper part of the central apse (Sanctuary) of Orthodox churches.

The Virgin Mary is usually depicted seated on a throne, holding the infant Jesus Christ in her arms. However, in many cases, as in this particular colored lithograph, she is also depicted standing, with her arms outstretched and slightly raised.

The title “Platytera of the Heavens” originates from a famous verse of the Akathist Hymn: “Rejoice, O shelter of the world, wider than the heavens.”

The iconographer, a monk from Mount Athos, who took care of the aging technique and the handmade details of this icon of the Virgin Mary, follows the centuries-old tradition of iconography and the aging techniques used in the Holy Mountain (Mount Athos).
