Description

Icon of the Last Supper on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon of the Last Supper on naturally aged wood from an Athonite cell. The monk who created this work respects the age of the wood and faithfully portrays the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

On the Thursday before Jesus is led to the cross, He holds the Last Supper in Jerusalem with His disciples, during which Judas betrays Him. Before the meal begins, Jesus washes the feet of all His disciples, wanting to teach them humility. Then, He sits at the table, takes the bread in His hands, and says, “Take, eat.” He does the same with the cup of wine, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is My blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In this way, He entrusted humanity with the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

The meaning of the Last Supper is the dual nature of love: joy and sorrow, light and darkness. Christ’s love for His disciples and for humanity brings salvation from passions. However, at the same time, Judas’ love for thirty pieces of silver is destructive and leads him from light into darkness. On Holy Thursday, the Church commemorates the Last Supper, the moment when the Lord Himself delivered the mystery of the Holy Eucharist to humanity.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
