Description

Lithograph of The Last Supper

An exquisite image of the Last Supper, the final gathering of Jesus with His disciples before His Crucifixion. According to Christian faith, the Last Supper took place between Jesus and the Twelve Apostles in Jerusalem, one day before His Crucifixion. Today, this day is known as Holy Thursday. During the Last Supper, Christ washed the feet of His disciples and shared His Body and Blood with them, saying: “Take, eat; this is My body,” and also: “This is My blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.” It is considered to be the first icon in the history of art to depict the Apostles reacting in different ways to the revelation from Jesus that one of them would betray Him.

Lithograph: Characteristics

The artist used the lithography technique to create this work of exceptional beauty, enhanced by the iconographic theme of the Last Supper. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special importance.
