Description

Antiqued Lithograph of the Dormition of the Theotokos

An image of the Dormition of the Theotokos created using the antiqued lithograph technique.

According to ecclesiastical tradition, the Theotokos, after the Crucifixion of Jesus, lived in the house of the Evangelist John. She was informed of her impending death by an angel of the Lord, most likely the Archangel Gabriel, three days before it occurred. After praying on the Mount of Olives, she distributed her belongings to two widowed neighbors.

The Dormition of the Theotokos took place in the house of the Evangelist John, while a cloud lifted the Apostles and brought them all before the bed where the Theotokos lay. The only apostle absent from her funeral was Apostle Thomas, who, upon his return, requested that the tomb be opened so he could venerate her as well. After three days, the tomb was opened, and to their astonishment, they discovered that the Virgin Mary had resurrected and ascended to heaven.

In Greece, the Dormition of the Theotokos is celebrated with great splendor on August 15, and it is also referred to as the “Pascha of Summer.”

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and completed this work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
