Sandblasting with the Seven-Sworded Virgin
A stunning image depicting the Seven-Sworded Virgin.
In this highly unusual image, the Virgin Mary is shown with her heart pierced by seven swords. In the most common iconographic style, four swords are shown on her left and three on her right.
Because Catholics have adopted the worship of the “Heart of the Mother of God,” many consider the Seven-Sworded Virgin image to be of Catholic origin. However, in reality, the image is connected to the prophecy of Saint Simeon the God-Receiver, which is recorded by the Evangelist Luke: “And a sword will pierce your own soul too…” (Luke 2:35).
This verse refers to the pain the Virgin Mary would feel at the moment of parting from her beloved Son, when He would be led to His crucifixion before her eyes.
The Seven-Sworded Virgin is also known as “the prophecy of the Righteous Simeon.” It is celebrated by the Church on August 13th.
