Gold Foil Printing with Sandblasting: The Annunciation of the Theotokos

An amazing gold foil print representation of the Annunciation of the Theotokos.

The Annunciation of the Theotokos is essentially the joyful news that the Virgin Mary received from the Archangel Gabriel, informing her that she would bring Jesus Christ into the world in a miraculous way. According to the Evangelist Luke, the event of the Annunciation took place in Nazareth. In the sixth month from the conception of the Forerunner, the Archangel Gabriel, sent by God, met Mary at the place where she lived and greeted her with: “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you.”

This is one of the most significant feasts of Orthodoxy, as it marks the beginning of salvation for humanity. Through the Annunciation, God’s plan to save the world through the incarnation of His Son is revealed to both angels and humans. When the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth, she is initially puzzled and asks how this can happen, as she has no husband. The Archangel Gabriel reassures her that the Holy Spirit will take care of everything.

Gold Foil Printing with Sandblasting: Features

In the image of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the iconographer monk used the technique of gold foil printing to create a work of exceptional beauty. Gold foil printing is a type of thermal printing technique. Thermal printing is the method in which a very thin sheet of gold is applied to surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, or plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (cliché) onto the surface. Around the perimeter of the image, the technique of sandblasting is also used. Sandblasting is a process in which part or the entire surface is eroded by the pressurized application of sand.
