Description

Lithograph with Saint David in Thessaloniki

Saint David came from northern Mesopotamia, which was a large monastic center, and was born around 450. For reasons not mentioned by the saint’s biographer, the saint came to Thessaloniki and initially entered the holy monastery of the holy martyrs Theodore and Mercurius or holy monasteries of the Koukoulliats or the Aproits. In this monastery the saint lived very strictly. The examples of the holy men of the Old Testament, especially of the Prophet David, who “lived for three years in order to give him goodness and learning and prudence”, prompted the saint to decide to asceticize on a tree for three consecutive years. At the end of his three years of patient practice, an angel of the Lord appeared, who assured him that his prayer had been heard and his trial as a dendrite ascetic was over.

The saint for a long time was full of fear and terror from the presence of the angel. Then, he began to thank and glorify God, who heard his prayer and after inviting his disciples, told them what had happened to him and asked for their help in building the cell, where he would continue his practice. At this time (after 520) a big problem arose. A question had been raised about the choice of the Illyricum Illyricum (which included the whole of the Balkans as far as Crete). Thus, the emperor Justinian with Neara 11 of the year 535, detached from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the archbishop of Thessaloniki the northern provinces of Illyricum and elevated his particular homeland to an archbishopric under the title of Nea Justiniana.

to emphasize its contribution to the salvation of man.

Lithography: Characteristics

Using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the hagiographer monk created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as he was taught on Mount Athos. At its edges, the image has scratches from the method of artificial aging.
