Description

Image of Saint Sophia of Kleisoura on Naturally Aged Wood

Saint Sophia of Kleisoura, often called the ascetic of the Virgin Mary, was born in 1883 in Trebizond, Pontus. After losing both her child and her husband in a short period of time, she retreated to the mountains to live an ascetic life with strict fasting. She is famous for having seen a vision of Saint George, who warned her of an impending raid, which allowed her to save her fellow villagers. In 1927, she moved to the Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Kleisoura, Kastoria, where she lived for nearly half a century, enduring severe winters without heating and subsisting on very little food. She passed away on May 6, 1974.

This stunning serigraph of Saint Sophia of Kleisoura is printed on naturally aged wood, sourced from restoration work in a cell on Mount Athos. The composition respects the age of the wood and faithfully represents the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

Handcrafted with the wood processed by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
