Description

Antiqued Lithograph with Saint Pelagia of Tinos

Saint Pelagia was born in 1752 in Tinos and was the daughter of Father Nikiforos Negrepontis. Her secular name was Loukia.

From the age of 12, she showed signs of a strong desire to dedicate herself and serve the will of God, and at the age of 15, she entered the monastery as a novice under the supervision of her aunt, the nun Pelagia. When the time came, she became a nun herself and took the name Pelagia.

As a nun, she dedicated herself fully to the worship of God and the relief of those suffering. The purity of her soul and the holiness of her life led her to become the “vessel of choice” through which the Virgin Mary revealed to her the location of the Holy Icon of Tinos (January 30, 1823). This event, which occurred when Saint Pelagia was 73 years old and the Archbishop of Tinos was Gabriel, made Tinos a holy island and ranked Pelagia among the saints.

Through the intercessions of the Virgin Mary and the grace of God, Saint Pelagia performed many miracles both before and after her death, which occurred on April 28, 1834. She was buried in the Archangels’ Church of the monastery.

In 1973, a grand church was built in her name, where her sacred head is kept and venerated. She was canonized by a Patriarchal Synodal Act on September 11, 1970, and her feast day was set to be celebrated on July 23, the day of her vision.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

In this particular image, the iconographer monk used the lithography technique to create a uniquely beautiful work. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this piece by following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught to him in the iconography workshops of the Athonite Monastic State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process in which the monks of Mount Athos place great emphasis.
