Description

Antiqued Lithograph with Saint Urania

Saint Urania was one of the forty virgins and ascetics who, together with their teacher Ammon, confessed their faith in God, which led to their death sentence by Licinius.

Ammon and eight of his female disciples were beheaded, ten were thrown into the fire, ten were killed by a sword through their mouth and heart, six were forced to swallow hot stones, and the remaining six were stabbed.

Their memory is honored by the Orthodox Christian Church on September 1st.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

In this particular image, the iconographer monk used the lithography technique to create a uniquely beautiful work. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this piece by following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught to him in the iconography workshops of the Athonite Monastic State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process in which the monks of Mount Athos place great emphasis.
