Description

Iconography with gold leaf on a natural piece of wood from a cypress tree, created by the hands of Monks from Mount Athos.

An exceptional icon depicting Saint Xenia.

Saint Xenia lived in the 5th century AD. Her original name was Eusebia, and she came from Rome.

Rejecting her parents’ pressure to marry a man of their choice, she secretly left for Alexandria, where she took the name Xenia to erase her identity. She then went to the island of Kos and later settled in Mylas in Caria. There, together with two of her faithful servants, she built a church in honor of Saint Stephen, the first martyr, and constructed solitary cells for a life of quiet contemplation.

Her virtuous and ascetic life quickly brought young women to her who desired to follow the life of asceticism and prayer. The monastery became a renowned spiritual center, where many women gathered daily to seek the saint’s advice and prayers.

Her holiness was recognized during the burial of her sacred body when a cross formed by stars appeared in the sky.

The Church commemorates her memory on January 24th.
