Description

Aged Lithograph of Saint Photini the Samaritan

An exact replica of the original image, crafted on natural pine wood.

Saint Photini the Great Martyr was from the Samaritan city of Sychar. The first information about her can be found in the 4th chapter of the Gospel of John (John 4:1-38).

Every noon, she would go outside the city to the well called Jacob’s Well to fill her water jug. One day, she met Jesus Christ there, and He revealed her whole life to her. The Lord told her that He was the “living water,” meaning the inexhaustible source of the Holy Spirit. This “spiritual water” was given by the Lord to the Samaritan woman, who was baptized as a Christian among the first women of Samaria and was named Photini.

From then on, she dedicated herself to spreading the Gospel in Africa and Rome. There, she received a martyr’s death from Emperor Nero (54–68), when he learned that Saint Photini had made his daughter Domnina and some of her maidservants Christians.

Along with Saint Photini, her sons and five sisters also suffered martyrdom.

Lithograph – Features

The technique of lithography is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by many monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk-artist used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and created this piece following the traditional method of handmade aging. He thus produced a magnificent work with unique aesthetic value. The wood has been treated with the appropriate materials to ensure great durability of the colors over time.
