Description

Icon on Canvas with Saint Photini the Samaritan Woman

Exact replica of the original icon crafted on natural fir wood.

Saint Photini the Great Martyr hailed from the Samaritan city of Sychar. The first references to the Saint are found in Chapter 4 of the Gospel of John (John 4:1-38).

Every noon, she would go outside the city to Jacob’s Well to fill her pitcher. One day, she met Jesus Christ there, who revealed her entire life to her. The Lord told her that He is the “living water,” the inexhaustible source of the Holy Spirit. This “spiritual water” was given to the Samaritan woman, who was baptized as one of the first Christian women of Samaria and was named Photini.

From that point on, she dedicated her life to spreading the Gospel in Africa and Rome. In Rome, she suffered a martyr’s death under Emperor Nero (54–68) when he learned that Saint Photini had converted his daughter Domnina and some of her servants to Christianity.

Along with Saint Photini, her sons and five sisters also suffered martyrdom.

Icon on Canvas – Characteristics

In the printing technique on canvas, the monastic iconographer used a replica of a Byzantine icon and crafted the piece with embossed elements. The icon is entirely handcrafted using an aging technique. The canvas is coated with a special primer to ensure the colors remain unchanged over time.
