Saint Nikiforos was a priest from a village in Chania, Crete. He was orphaned at an early age and left home at the age of 13. At the age of 16 and when the signs of the disease that afflicted him, leprosy, began to become more evident, he went to Egypt, but later he took refuge in Chios in a leper home, where Father Anthimos Vagianos, later Saint Anthimos, was a priest. There he became a monk named Nikiforos.

The disease progressed more and more, but Agios Nikiforos lived with strict fasting and worked in the gardens. He prayed at night for endless hours, doing penances and was the main chanter of the temple. Later he and other people were sent to the Anti-Leprosy Station of Agia Varvara, Athens, in Aegaleo. At that time father Nikiforos was about 67 years old. His limbs and his eyes were completely altered and deformed by the disease, yet a multitude of people flocked to the humble cell of the leper monk Nikephoros to receive his wish, while the miracles attributed to him are also numerous.
