Description

Embossed Silkscreen on Wood Featuring the Synaxis of the Archangels

This silkscreen icon depicts the Synaxis of the Archangels.
God, the Creator of the entire universe, created not only the visible, material world but also the immaterial and invisible Angelic realm, as the Maker of “all things visible and invisible.” Angels are bodiless and immaterial beings who ceaselessly glorify God. They surround His Throne in Heaven with awe, reverence, and fear, covering their faces with their wings, for they cannot gaze directly upon God.

God created ten angelic orders, nine of which are known as: Angels, Archangels, Principalities, Authorities, Powers, Thrones, Dominions, Cherubim, and Seraphim. The leader of the tenth order was Lucifer, who, overcome with pride, boasted that he would raise his throne above the clouds and become like God. As soon as he conceived these thoughts, the Devil and his order fell from heavenly glory and were transformed from radiant Angels into dark demons.

The Archangel Michael witnessed this fall and understood its cause. With humility and obedience, he remained faithful to God. Because of his devotion, God appointed Michael as the leader of the heavenly hosts. Archangel Michael gathered and unified the remaining Angels and called out, “Let us be attentive”—a call to recognize who God is and what it means to be an Angel. God is the Lord and Creator of all; Angels are His servants and creations. Thus, the Angels praised and glorified God, singing the angelic hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Hosts; heaven and earth are full of His glory.”

To honor the angels and their divine mission, the Church has designated November 8th as the Feast of the Synaxis of the Archangels.
