Description

Silk Screen Print of Saint David on Naturally Aged Wood

A silk screen print on naturally aged wood of Saint David of Euboea, who was known for his fasting, all-night prayers, and countless prostrations.

Saint David was born in the village of Gardinitza, near Talantio, a seaside area opposite Euboea. His father, Christodoulos, was a priest, and his mother was Theodora. From a young age, Saint David had the blessing of God and the protection of the Holy Forerunner himself! It was, therefore, inevitable for him to follow the path of the Monastic State. At the age of 15, he submitted himself to an elder, Akakios, who trained him in the virtues of monastic life. From then on, Saint David embarked on a remarkable spiritual journey, teaching practical virtue and performing various miracles.

He became a priest and was appointed abbot of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, known as Varnakova, near Nafpaktos. Accused of sheltering a runaway slave, he was captured by the Turks and subjected to severe torture. However, he was released through a ransom collected by the faithful in the area and left to find a new place of solitude in Euboea. There, he rebuilt a church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Savior and soon gathered around him people who shared his love for prayer.

He foresaw his death and passed away peacefully and with great holiness on November 1st. After his death, many miracles occurred at his tomb. The Monastery of Saint David exists in Euboea, where the modern Saint Iakovos Tsalikis (November 22) served as abbot. His canonization took place in 2017.

Two elements contribute to the unique aesthetic value of this icon. One is the flawlessly crafted depiction of the Saint by the Athonite monk, and the second is the naturally aged wood from a restored cell of Mount Athos, which has been used as the base for the icon.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
