This lithograph depicts two particularly significant figures in Christianity, the Apostles Peter and Paul. Apostle Paul, known as the Apostle to the Gentiles, is not one of the twelve apostles. He was recognized as an equal-to-the-apostles saint after being called by the Lord. Once a fervent persecutor of Christ and Christians, he was divinely transformed into a passionate preacher of the Gospel. Apostle Paul became one of the most important figures in early Christianity and was a strong advocate for the universality of Jesus’ teachings.

Apostle Peter, the foremost of the apostles, was the brother of Apostle Andrew. Jesus called him Cephas (in Aramaic) or Peter (in Greek), meaning “Rock,” to emphasize the steadfastness of his character. He was married and lived in Capernaum. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of his presence in Rome, as there are no clear sources regarding his journey and martyrdom there.

Using a lithographed reproduction of Byzantine art, the monk-iconographer created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught at Mount Athos. The artificial aging of the icon is handmade, giving the depiction of the Apostles Peter and Paul a collectible value. The lithography technique in iconography is a printing method that was invented in 1798.
