Description

Lithograph with the Apostles Peter and Paul

Two of the most important figures of Christianity, the Apostles Peter and Paul, are represented in this lithograph. The Apostle Peter was the leader of the Apostles and Jesus called him Cepha (Cephas in Aramaic and Peter in Greek), which means Petra, wanting to emphasize the stability of his character. He was married and resided in Capernaum. However, there are no clear sources about his course and martyrdom.

The Apostle Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles, as he was called, does not belong to the twelve Apostles. He was recognized as an equal apostle and saint when he was later called by the Lord Himself. From an ardent persecutor of Christ and Christians, by divine intervention, he eventually turned into an ardent preacher of the Gospel.

Lithograph: Features

In the icon with the representation of the Apostles Peter and Paul, the hagiographer monk used the technique of lithography to create a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the hagiography workshops of the Athonite State. In fact, the artificial aging of hagiography is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos pay particular attention.
