Description

Aged Lithograph of Saint Charalambos
Saint Charalambos endured brutal torture and ultimately became a martyr for Christ at the age of 113. He served as a priest in Magnesia of Asia Minor and is estimated to have been born in 89 AD. According to historical records, he was arrested by the governor Lucian during the persecution of Christians initiated by Emperor Septimius Severus.

He suffered severe tortures, yet no one could persuade him to renounce his faith. He was eventually beheaded at the age of 113 (202 AD). The Church honors his memory on February 10th, referring to him with the title “Hieromartyr.” On the same day, Saints Porphyrios and Baptos are also commemorated—two soldiers who had been ordered to torture Saint Charalambos but, witnessing his martyrdom, converted to Christianity.

Aged Lithograph: Characteristics
This particular icon was created using the lithography technique, taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos. This method is widely used by many monks to produce outstanding works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and completed this piece following the traditional artificial aging method. The lithography technique in iconography essentially serves as a method of printing.
