Description

Antique Lithograph of Saint Simeon the God-Receiver.

Saint Simeon (February 2) lived in Jerusalem. He was righteous and devout. The information he received from the Holy Spirit, that he would not die before seeing Christ, encouraged him throughout his old age.

Finally, exactly forty days after the birth of Jesus, the Holy Spirit informed him to go to the Temple. Filled with joy and delight, he saw Joseph and the Virgin Mary coming, holding Jesus. Simeon, inwardly informed that this infant was Christ, took Him in his arms, and after receiving all the joy of His divine form, he looked up and said, thanking God: “Now You dismiss Your servant, O Master, according to Your word, in peace; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel.” In other words, “Now, take my soul in peace, O Master, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen the Savior You have prepared for all nations, a light that will reveal the true God and glorify Your people Israel.”

Antique Lithograph: Features

This particular image was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos and is also used by several monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographed copy of Byzantine art and crafted the work following the traditional method of artificial aging. The lithography technique in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
