Description

Lithograph of Saint Sabbas

Saint Sabbas of Kalymnos was born in 1862 AD in Heraklitsa, Eastern Thrace, to poor parents. At a very young age, he went to Mount Athos and settled in the Skete of Saint Anne. He stayed there for several years and then went to Jerusalem. After 26 years in the Holy Land, he returned to Greece.

He went back to Mount Athos and Patmos, and at some point, he ended up in Kalymnos. Eventually, he settled permanently at the Holy Monastery of All Saints. He painted icons, heard confessions, taught by example, and lived with humility, asceticism, and service to others. The official canonization of Saint Sabbas the New was performed by a Patriarchal Synodical Act on February 19, 1992 AD.

Lithograph: Features

The iconographer who created the image of Saint Sabbas used the technique of lithography, thus creating a work of unparalleled beauty. Specifically, by using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as he was taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process that the monks of Mount Athos place great importance on.
