Description

Serigraph of Saint Porphyrios on Naturally Aged Wood

An amazing image on naturally aged wood depicting the form of Saint Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia, who was canonized as a saint by the Orthodox Church in 2013 and is celebrated on December 2nd.

Father Porphyrios was born in 1906 in Evia and, at the age of 12, secretly left for Mount Athos. He became a monk at the age of 14 and took the name Niketas, but after a few years, he became seriously ill, which forced him to leave Mount Athos.

He returned to Evia, where he settled in the Monastery of Saint Charalambos in Lefka, and in 1926, he was ordained a priest by Porphyrios III, Archbishop of Sinai, who gave him the name Porphyrios. At the age of 22, he became a spiritual father and confessor, and shortly afterward, he was elevated to archimandrite. In 1940, on the eve of World War II, he took on duties as a priest and spiritual father at the Polyclinic of Athens, where he remained for many years. In June 1991, sensing his end, he went to his cell at the Monastery of Saint George in Kavsokalyvia on Mount Athos, where he departed from this life on December 2nd of the same year.

This remarkable depiction of Saint Porphyrios in the serigraph, the wood used for the image, and even the cracks running across its surface harmoniously come together to create a beautiful result. This is an image crafted by a monk from Mount Athos, and the wood used is sourced from a renovated cell. It is a collectible icon and, at the same time, a piece of the history of Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
