Description

Gold Leaf with Sandblasting featuring Saint Panteleimon

Gold leaf with Saint Panteleimon, who hailed from Nicomedia in Asia Minor. His martyrdom was caused by a miracle he performed. Specifically, he healed a blind man, who reported the event to the king, even stating that after his healing, he himself had come to believe in God. The king ordered the beheading of the healed blind man and summoned Panteleimon.

Saint Panteleimon was brought before the king, who ordered him to be tortured to renounce his faith. However, he did not succumb, as the Lord appeared before him to give him courage. In the end, the king ordered him to be beheaded. According to tradition, no blood flowed from his wounds, but milk did, and the olive tree where he was bound suddenly bore fruit.

Gold Leaf with Sandblasting: Characteristics

In the icon depicting Saint Panteleimon, the iconographer monk used the technique of gold leafing to create a work of unique beauty. Gold leafing is a type of thermographic technique. Thermography is the method in which a very thin metal foil is applied to surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, or plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (cliché) onto the surface. Around the icon, the technique of sandblasting is also used. Sandblasting is a process that achieves the erosion of part or all of a surface by blasting sand under pressure.
