Description

Saint Nicholas Saves Those in Danger at Sea

Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia, to devout parents. He lived during the reigns of emperors Diocletian (284-304 AD), Maximian (286-305 AD), and Constantine the Great.

He was orphaned at a young age, inheriting a large fortune from his parents. Inspired by philanthropic feelings, Nicholas used his wealth to help those in need.

He then devoted himself to ascetic life. However, due to his exceptional virtue, he was honored, without seeking it, first with the position of priest in Patara and later with the position of Archbishop of Myra. From this position, he lovingly guided his flock and boldly confessed the truth of the Gospel, which led to his arrest and imprisonment by local authorities.

When Constantine the Great became emperor, all imprisoned Christians were set free. Thus, Nicholas returned to the archbishopric of Myra. He also participated in the First Ecumenical Council, where he stood out for his wisdom and character.

Saint Nicholas was endowed, even while alive, with the gift of miracles. His miracles are countless to this day. He passed away in 330 AD. The Church commemorates his memory on December 6, and he is the patron saint of sailors.

Saint Nicholas Lithograph: Features

Using a lithographed replica of Byzantine art, the monk iconographer created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught on Mount Athos. The icon is adorned with gold finishing in the four corners, integrated into the engravings of the artificial aging.
