Saint Nicholas Saves Those in Danger at Sea
Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia, to devout parents. He lived during the reigns of Emperors Diocletian (284–304 AD), Maximian (286–305 AD), and Constantine the Great.

He became orphaned at a young age, inheriting a large fortune from his parents. Inspired by charitable feelings, Nicholas dedicated his wealth to help those in need.

He then devoted himself to an ascetic life. However, due to his exceptional virtue, he was honored, without seeking it, first with the rank of priest in Patara, and later with the position of Archbishop of Myra. From this position, he lovingly guided his flock and boldly professed the truth of the Gospel, which led to his arrest and imprisonment by local authorities.

When Emperor Constantine the Great came to power, all Christians who had been imprisoned were freed. Nicholas was restored to the Archbishopric of Myra. He even participated in the First Ecumenical Council, where he stood out for his wisdom and character.

Saint Nicholas was blessed with the gift of miracles while still alive. His miracles are countless to this day. He passed away in 330 AD. The Church commemorates his memory on December 6th, and he is the patron saint of sailors.

Using a lithographed reproduction of Byzantine art, the monk-iconographer created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught at Mount Athos. In the four corners, the icon is adorned with a gold finish, placed between the carvings of the artificial aging process.
