Description

Silkscreen of Saint Nicholas on Naturally Aged Wood

An exceptional icon depicting Saint Nicholas, one of the greatest saints of Orthodoxy, whose memory is honored on December 6th.

Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara of Lycia to devout and wealthy parents. Orphaned at a young age, he inherited a large fortune from his parents, which he used to help those in need.

He later devoted himself to an ascetic life and was subsequently honored with the position of Archbishop of Myra. From this position, he actively worked to protect the poor and needy, founding hospitals and charitable institutions. Endowed with a strong Christian spirit, courage, and vitality, he encouraged Christians persecuted by the Romans, facing persecution and exile himself for his stance. During the persecutions of Diocletian, he endured many tortures. However, when Emperor Constantine the Great ascended to the throne, all Christians were freed, and Nicholas resumed his role as archbishop. According to tradition, he was also gifted with the power of miracles, saving many people both during his life and after his death.

He is especially revered throughout Greece by people of the sea. He is the patron saint of sailors, the Hellenic Navy, and the Merchant Navy. He is also the patron saint of Alexandroupolis, Volos, Galaxidi, Kozani, Polygyros, Sitia, and Syros.

The history of this particular icon begins even before the monk-iconographer completed the depiction on the canvas. It is a magnificent work of art, as even the wooden base is part of Mount Athos, originating from a restored Athonite cell.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, slight variations in the wood may exist, but not in the depiction itself.

The icon is available upon request.
