Description

Aged Lithograph of Saint Nectarios
Saint Nectarios, also known as Nectarios of Pentapolis or Nectarios of Aegina, was a beloved hierarch and pastor. In 1904, he founded a women’s monastery on the island of Aegina, where he personally took charge after retiring there in 1908, following his resignation from the Rizarios School. The people of Aegina considered him a saint even before his passing, a reputation attributed to two main events.

Firstly, Saint Nectarios healed a young man possessed by a demon. Later, villagers visited him asking to pray for rain, as there had been a prolonged drought lasting almost three years. He held a Divine Liturgy with all the islanders present, and on the very same day, rain began to fall. His grace and fame continued to grow, and within four years, the monastery expanded to 15 nuns from the initial four. Forty years after his death, he was officially declared a saint on April 20, 1961, after his miracles and his significant pastoral and ecclesiastical work were recognized.

Aged Lithograph: Characteristics
In this particular image, the monk-iconographer used the lithography technique to create a work of exceptional beauty. Specifically, he employed a lithographed reproduction of Byzantine art and followed the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos. The artificial aging of this icon is handmade, a process that monks at Mount Athos give particular attention to.
