Description

Aged Lithograph with Saint Nektarios

Saint Nektarios, also known as Nektarios of Pentapolis or Nektarios of Aegina, was a beloved hierarch and shepherd. In 1904, he founded a women’s monastery on the island of Aegina, where he personally took charge of its administration after retiring there in 1908, following his resignation from the Rizarios School. The people of Aegina considered him a saint even before his death, a reputation attributed mainly to two key events.

First, Saint Nektarios healed a young man who was possessed, and later, villagers visited him asking him to pray for rain, as there had been a prolonged drought for nearly three years. He performed the Divine Liturgy with all the islanders present, and the same day, it began to rain. His grace and fame continued to grow, and within four years, the monastery expanded, reaching 15 nuns from the initial four. Forty years after his death, he was canonized as a saint on April 20, 1961, after his miracles were evaluated, as well as his significant pastoral and ecclesiastical work.

Aged Lithograph: Characteristics

In this image, the monk iconographer used the lithography technique to create a beautifully unique work. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk painted the work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite Monastic Republic. The artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process in which the monks of Mount Athos place great emphasis.
