Description

Saint Luke the Physician – Silkscreen on Naturally Aged Wood

This icon of Saint Luke the Physician, Bishop of Simferopol, is presented on naturally aged wood, showcasing a unique composition. The icon has been meticulously crafted on wood that has naturally aged, with an ornate halo added to the image.

Saint Luke, canonized in May 1996 by the Russian Orthodox Church, was a Russian archbishop and a renowned surgeon. Born on April 27, 1877, in Kerch, Crimea, he was deeply devoted to helping the suffering and chose to study medicine as a means of serving his community. His life was marked by personal sacrifice, including the early death of his wife, after which he never remarried.

Saint Luke was deeply committed to his work, often reaching exhaustion while saving lives and relieving pain, drawing strength from his constant prayers and his love for Christ. He authored over forty scientific works, with one of his most famous publications, Essays on the Surgery of Pyogenic Infections (1934), forming the foundation for an entire medical specialty. He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1946 for his scientific contributions, though he donated the prize money to the poor.

A devout Christian, Saint Luke never missed a service and always attended church standing. Before every surgical operation, he would pray before an icon of the Virgin Mary and make the sign of the cross on the patient using iodine before proceeding with the surgery.

He suffered greatly for his unwavering faith, enduring imprisonment, exile, and persecution due to his steadfast Orthodox Christian beliefs. He passed away on June 11, 1961, and his body was placed for public veneration.

As the icon is handmade, the natural aging process of the wood may result in slight variations, but the depiction itself remains consistent.
