Description

Aged Lithograph of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer

Saint Ignatius is honored by the Church on December 20. The exact date of his birth and his nationality are unclear. He ascended to the episcopal throne of Antioch between 68-70 AD. As an apostolic teacher, he shepherded and guarded the souls of his flock.

When Emperor Trajan ordered a persecution of Christians, Ignatius courageously appeared before him in Antioch and defended the Church’s rights and the truth of the Christian faith. Trajan then ordered his arrest and transfer to Rome. The Christians of Rome intended to save him from martyrdom, but Ignatius, with a burning desire for martyrdom, wrote to them to let God’s will be done. Thus, on December 20, 107 AD, he was thrown into the amphitheater, where hungry beasts devoured him. Only the larger bones were recovered and were honored with a burial in Antioch.

In this way, Ignatius remained faithful to the teachings of Christ until the end, and as it is written, “He who abides in the doctrine of Christ, has both the Father and the Son” (2 John 9). He who remains in Christ’s teachings, has both the Father and the Son, because he has become a temple of God and therefore carries God within him. For this reason, Ignatius was called God-bearer (Theophorus).

Aged Lithograph: Characteristics

This particular icon was created using the lithography technique, which is taught in the iconography workshops of Mount Athos. It is also used by many monks to create exceptional works of art. In this case, the monk used a lithographic copy of Byzantine art and adorned it using the traditional method of artificial aging. Lithography in iconography is essentially a printing technique.
