Description

Saint Gregory Palamas was a great theologian and an eminent orator and philosopher. During the first half of the 14th century AD he was at the imperial court of Constantinople, from where he retired to Mount Athos for the sake of a quieter life, and devoted himself to his moral perfection and various studies.

Gregory Palamas, who also served as Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, is honored as one of the most important saints of Orthodoxy, and his theological work is considered as the basis for the Greek theological production of the last 7 centuries. The Orthodox Church commemorates him on November 14.

In this color lithograph of Saint Gregory Palamas, hagiographer Nektarios Nestos applied the technique of artificial aging as he was taught it on Mount Athos and in the hagiography workshops of the Holy Monasteries where he studied.
