Saint Fanourios (27 August), this beloved saint, remained unknown for many centuries. He became known when his icon was accidentally found in Rhodes in the 14th century AD. There was found an ancient temple with many destroyed icons. Among them was the well-preserved icon on which the then metropolitan of Rhodes Nile II Diasporinos (1355-1369 AD) read the name of the saint “Saint Fano”. In the icon, the saint was represented as a young soldier, holding a cross in his right hand, on which there was a lit candle.

In the earthly Paradise, Mount Athos, lived for many years the wood where the martyrdom of Saint Fanourios is depicted. There was part of an old cell that was renovated. The monks who saw in it its future use as an icon, carefully cut and preserved the wood with methods known on Mount Athos from the maintenance of wooden iconostasis.

Sandblasted Gold Printing: Features

In the icon with the representation of Agios Fanourios, the hagiographer monk used the technique of gold printing creating a work of unique beauty. Gold-stamping is a kind of hot-stamping technique. Hot-stamping is the method by which very thin metal gold sheet is placed on surfaces such as wood, leather, cardboard, plastic by pressing a heated embossed plate (plate) on our surface. Around the image you also use the technique of sandblasting, it is the technical treatment that achieves the corrosion of part or all of a surface by pouring sand under pressure.
