Description

Antiqued Lithograph of Saint Euthymius

Saint Euthymius the Great was born in Melitene, Armenia, in the year 377 AD. His parents had him in old age and dedicated him to the service of God, naming him Euthymius, as his birth brought them joy, happiness, and delight. In 406 AD, he went to Jerusalem and secluded himself in the cave of Saint Theoctistus, where he practiced strict asceticism. Many monks gathered around him, and they elected him as their abbot.

Saint Euthymius had received the gift of foresight and the power of miracles from God. With just a few loaves of bread, he managed to feed four hundred people who had visited his cell on the same day. Additionally, many women, through his prayers, were blessed with children. A sign of his purity and holiness was the fact that he could discern who was approaching to receive Communion with a pure or defiled conscience.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

In this particular image, the iconographer monk used the lithograph technique to create a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk crafted this piece following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. Moreover, the artificial aging of the icon is handmade, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos give special attention.
