Description

Antiqued Lithograph with Saint Euthymius

Saint Euthymius the Great was born in Melitene, Armenia, in the year 377 AD. His parents had him in old age and dedicated him to the service of God, naming him Euthymius, as his birth brought them cheer, joy, and delight. In 406 AD, he went to Jerusalem and secluded himself in the cave of Saint Theoktistos, where he practiced asceticism with strictness. Many monks gathered around him, and they elected him as their abbot.

Saint Euthymius was granted the gifts of prophecy and miraculous power by God. With only a few loaves of bread, he managed to feed four hundred people who visited his cell on the same day. Many women, through his prayers, were blessed with children. A sign of his purity and holiness was his ability to discern whether someone approached to receive Communion with a pure or stained conscience.

The Church honors his memory on January 20th.

Antiqued Lithograph: Characteristics

In this particular icon, the monk iconographer used the technique of lithography to create a work of unique beauty. Specifically, using a lithographed copy of Byzantine art, the monk created this work following the traditional method of artificial aging, as taught in the iconography workshops of the Athonite State. The artificial aging of the icon is handcrafted, a process to which the monks of Mount Athos pay particular attention.
